The IZES gGmbH was founded as an associated institute to the University of Applied Sciences Saarbruecken. After merging with the Energy Agency of the Saarland (later AZES GmbH), IZES is operating as a non-profit organisation/limited. IZES is advising, accompanying and carrying out activities to initiate, devise and realise innovative measures for rational energy use and for the application of renewable energies. Here, energy technology, energy market and material flow related topics are analysed in an integrated and systematic manner. The department Material Flow Management under the leadership of Prof Frank Baur is addressing bioenergy production and utilisation, waste and resource management and material based process and utilisation chains in the context of sustainability and climate protection. The activities comprise of the development of regional and transnational bioenergy strategies, biomass master plans, zero-emission-strategies, material flow management concepts and life cycle assessment and inventories. Therefore the focus is attributed to the initiation, management, scientific review and monitoring and realisation of regional projects; and the development and implementation of national, but also bi- and tri-national, stakeholder networks. The systemic oriented research approach concentrates especially on the analysis of effects and interrelations of technologies and measures within defined system boundaries, as for instance competitions in usage occurring from the utilisation of renewable raw materials.
